1) 2016 Mississippi disAbility MegaConference – June 16-17, Jackson

There’s still time to register for the Mississippi disAbility MegaConference, the state’s largest conference for people with disabilities, their families and professionals. Speakers and vendors share the latest information and innovations on topics such as health care, education, employment, mental health and more. Continuing education credits are available for therapists, administrators, social workers, rehabilitation counselors, educators, and attorneys. On Wednesday, June 15, enjoy Dream Night at the Jackson Zoo from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The conference will be held at the Marriott Downtown in Jackson on Thursday, June 16, and Friday, June 17. Keynote speakers are Toby Willis and comedian Zach Anner. There will be an awards luncheon and evening entertainment on Thursday. 2) Webinar – Addressing Health Coverage Inequities Among CSHCN – June 20, 1 p.m. CDT

The Catalyst Center's new tutorial, Health Care Coverage and Financing for Children with Special Health Care Needs: A Tutorial to Address Inequities, can help Maternal Child Health leaders, family leaders, and other stakeholders understand and address health care coverage inequities that exist among vulnerable subgroups of children with special health care needs based on race, ethnicity, language, immigration status, and level of functional difficulty. 3) Parenting with a Disability

The National Council on Disability (NCD) and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation has released “Parenting with a Disability: Know Your Rights Toolkit” on the Civil Rights of Parents with Disabilities. Currently, 35 states include disability as grounds for termination of parental rights. Nine states and the District of Columbia list physical disability in particular as grounds for termination of parental rights, even without evidence of abuse or neglect. These states include Kansas, Maryland, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Carolina in addition to the nation’s capital. In every state, the presence of a disability can be arbitrarily used when determining the “best” interests of a child. 4) HRSA Launches New Title V Information System Website

HRSA (Health Resources and Services Administration) recently launched a new and useful Title V Information System (TVIS) website. It uses interactive maps to show federal and state level data (financial, performance, etc.) reported by Title V programs. You can also access your state’s snapshot and action plan; the latter identifies priority needs, outlines related objectives and strategies, and connects them to National Outcome Measures and National Performance Measures. 5) Traveling this summer? Arrange Accommodations for Airport Security Screening Ahead of Time

With the summer travel season now here, families of children and young adults with disabilities may be concerned about dealing with airport security screenings. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which manages U.S. airport security, encourages families to contact the TSA for help. Calling a few days before departure to ask for appropriate accommodations can help make the process go more smoothly. The presentation also covers the origins and evolution of the medical home model, talking to your primary care manager, what should be offered and the positive outcomes to having a medical home. 3) 2016 Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Conference – Apr. 13-14, Jackson

The annual Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Conference hosted by the Brain Injury Association of Mississippi is set for Apr. 13-14, at the UMMC Conference Center at the Jackson Medical Mall at 350 Woodrow Wilson Drive in Jackson. Registration fees are free for TBI/SCI survivors, $25 for caregivers and students, and $125 for professionals. Registration includes lunch and continuing education hours. 4) How Families Can Teach Health Care Self-Advocacy

Health care is one of the most difficult areas for children with disabilities to navigate. Recognizing this need, Family Voices of New Hampshire has created resources that assist families in helping their child find their way in the medical arena. 5) New AAP Online Motor Delay Tool

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is providing new information for families and professionals. Physical Developmental Delays: What to Look For is an interactive online tool, for parents of children ages 5 and under to use when they are concerned about their child’s motor development. The tool lists physical activities by the age at which they are typically performed. If a parent is concerned, they can click on boxes next to activity descriptions. This creates a list – with space for notes – that can be taken to the next pediatrician appointment. For the interactive online tool, visit http://motordelay.aap.org/. Health care professionals who are approached by parents and caregivers with these concerns can refer families to the AAP clinical report, Motor Delays: Early Identification and Evaluation, which includes an algorithm to guide developmental surveillance and screening, red flags signaling a need for prompt referral and recommendations, including appropriate testing. 6) Guidance on Health Care and Job Training for Youth with Disabilities

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) have issued a “Dear Colleague” letter for youth service providers, state and local agencies, and policymakers. The letter notes the interdependence between health and wellness and employment and offers guidance to ensure that young people with disabilities or chronic health conditions receive health care transition and job training services under the Affordable Care Act and Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). 4) EmployAbility Job Fair - – Mar. 31, Jackson

The third annual Employability Job Fair will be held Thurs., Mar. 31, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Thad Cochran Center at the Jackson Medical Mall at 350 W. Woodrow Wilson Avenue in Jackson. The event is co-sponsored by the Governor’s Office and Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services’ offices of Vocational Rehabilitation and Vocational Rehabilitation for the Blind. Use Twitter, Facebook and other forms of social media to spread the messages about the importance of a healthy start for all school-aged children.
