1) Medical Home Webinar – Mar. 8, 12 p.m. CST

 

The Mississippi Family to Family Health Information and Education Center at the Institute for Disability Studies will present Medical Home: Primary Health Care We All Deserve on Tues., Mar. 8, at 12 p.m. The presenter, F2F Parent Consultant Keishawna Smith, will provide an overview of what a medical home is and why, as a parent of a child/youth with a special health care need, you should advocate to implement it as standard care. This presentation will also cover the origins and evolution of the medical home model, talking to your primary care manager, what should be offered and the positive outcomes to having a medical home. The webinar is presented in partnership with the Mississippi Parent Training and Information Center. 2) Disability Awareness Day at the State Capitol – Mar. 10, Jackson

 

Spend the day at your state Capitol on Thursday, Mar. 10, from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Talk with your legislators about the issues in your community affecting people with disabilities, their families and special health care needs. Make contact with the state’s disability organizations. For more information, call the Mississippi Coalition for Citizens with Disabilities at 601.969.0601.

 

3) Local Family2Family Meetings – Mar. 12, Hattiesburg; Mar. 15, Jackson

 

Navigating the health care system for children with special health care needs care be tricky. Need help? Regional parent consultants are available to help families find needed health care information and resources in all areas of the state. Upcoming local-area family meetings will be held in Hattiesburg (Sat., Mar. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Hattiesburg Public Library at 329 Hardy Street) and in the Jackson metro area (Tues., Mar. 15, at 8:15 a.m. at Magnolia Speech School at 733 North Flag Chapel Road). 4) EmployAbility Job Fair - – Mar. 31, Jackson

 

The third annual Employability Job Fair will be held Thurs., Mar. 31, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Thad Cochran Center at the Jackson Medical Mall at 350 W. Woodrow Wilson Avenue in Jackson. The event is co-sponsored by the Governor’s Office and Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services’ offices of Vocational Rehabilitation and Vocational Rehabilitation for the Blind. No registration required for job seekers. Employers will be onsite at the fair. Resume’ writing and interview skills sessions will be held. 5) Six Core Elements of Health Care Transition

 

Health care transition is the process of changing from a pediatric to an adult model of health care. The goal of transition is to optimize health and assist youth in reaching their full potential. 6) National Nutrition Month

 

“Savor the Flavor of Eating Right” is the theme of National Nutrition Month. The purpose of the campaign is to focus on mindful eating while embracing food traditions and social experiences. Help support schools in ensuring all children get a healthy start during National School Breakfast Week, March 7-11. Use Twitter, Facebook and other forms of social media to spread the messages about the importance of a healthy start for all school-aged children.
